Decisions made in Minutes

Should I Close My Account?

Many people have accounts that they have not used in a long time. Most accounts at banks will close, if you do not use them, while at others will remain open forever. When it comes to deciding if you should close an account is up to you. You will have to decide if you will need to use the account in the future because if you close it, you will have to apply all over again.

The same thing applies to dormant credit cards . If your credit card is not maxed out and you have not used it in at least six months, it is a good idea to close it. Before you close it, make sure that you do not owe any money on the account.

By closing the account, it will keep you from using it and going into debt. Many credit card issuers will close it for you, if it has not been used in a long time. The credit user may not like it because they may just want to have a credit card on hand for emergencies. A credit card user fails to realize that it costs the credit card issuer money to keep it open.

A person who wants to prevent there credit card from closing should use there credit card at least once a month for small purchases and pay it off immediately. This way the credit card issuer will know that you are still using the card. Also, by keeping your credit card active will show positively on your credit report. Credit report scores are based on how long you have had the account and if you are in good standing.

The amount of inactive accounts should play a role in deciding whether you should close or keep an account open. You should not have a whole lot of inactive accounts. When it comes to credit cards, it is best to just have one and use it at least once a month. Depending on how long you have had each account, it may not show negatively on your credit report. If you had the credit cards for a lot of years, it may no affect your credit score.
